Getting your teeth cleaned and examined may seem like a routine procedure at this point. However, do you ever wonder exactly what your dentist is looking for? Aside from the normal cavities and plaque build-up, what makes a healthy mouth? Are there certain standards that they check for? The answer is yes.

One of the most common tests for oral health is the Comprehensive Periodontal Evaluation, also known as CPE. There are quite a few factors that can determine whether or not you pass. And, as a patient, it is a little daunting not understanding what your dentist is looking for. That’s why we decided to break it down for you:

What is CPE?

CPE is a recommended oral exam to evaluate gum health. Your dentist looks at many areas including:

  • Your teeth
  • Your plaque
  • Your gums
  • Your bite
  • Your bone structure
  • Your risk factors

This evaluation should happen annually as a way to check for major issues before they have a chance to mature into a more serious problem such as tooth loss and gum disease. After looking at these 6 areas, your dentist can then determine your oral health and what precautions may need to be taken.

Why would I get CPE?

Aside from the being a good way to judge your gum and oral health, there are many other reasons why you need a CPE. Simply put, by assessing your oral health annually, you and your dentist will know how healthy your mouth is, and will be better able to notice any conditions that may need additional treatment.

It has also been noted that there is an association between gum disease and other inflammatory conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory diseases. It can be very important and helpful to treat the inflammation that causes gum disease as soon as possible to ensure that your entire body stays healthy – not just your mouth.

When was the last time you had a Comprehensive Periodontal Evaluation? If you’re unsure, or if the answer is “never,” it may be time to contact your local dentist and schedule that appointment. Don’t wait until it’s too late! Or, if you feel like your oral health may be in a sad state don’t hesitate to contact us at Emergency Dental today!
